MENDEL COHEN was born abt 1837 in Kovel, Russian, Poland, and died on the 24th March 1909 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia (Regno 2416). He was the son of Myer Yosef Cohen and Leah Glagowski. He married HANNAH SOLOMONS on the 9th September 1863 at the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, daughter of LEWIS SOLOMONS and CHARLOTTE SAMUEL (Regno 3102). She was born on the 25th July 1846 in St George East, London, England, and died on the 4th September 1922 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia (Regno 11262).
Notes for Mendel (Menachem) Cohen:
The City of Melbourne Rates Book shows that one year before, the tenant at both addresses was one Lewis Solomon. Allowing for the regular dropping of the 's' from Solomons, it is more likely that this was Mendel's new father-in-law, Lewis Solomons. (The still unanswered question is how, when and where Mendel met Hannah, for the first time.)
Whilst Mendel's occupation at this time was that of a Pawnbroker, it also appears that he must have been a trader as well. Mendel, David Abrahams and Wolfe Brasch, all pawnbrokers at the time, charged a 'Chinaman' with fraud for selling them chests of tea which they later discovered contained bricks and sawdust covered with a layer of the supposed commodity. (Lazarus M. Goldman. Jews in Victoria in the nineteenth Century. Page 239.)
Mendel was naturalised on Wednesday, 27 August 1873. His supporting papers show his age as 35 and his occupation as pawnbroker.
1n 1887, Mendel moved his business to 236 Russell Street. A brick shop and bath room- 8 rooms.
Mendel passed away on Wednesday 24 March at 198 Russell St. from what the Death Certificate described as 'disease of the heart and kidneys' at the age of 71 years. He was buried on Friday 26 March in the Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton. His obituary in The Jewish Herald covered two columns;
His Death Certificate also stated that he was a resident of Victoria for 54 years.
On Sunday 11 April 1909, the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation passed the following resolution;
"That this congregation in general meeting assembled place on record their sense of the loss sustained by them in the death of the late president and trustee, Mr Mendel Cohen, who for upwards of a quarter of a century took a deep interest in, and rendered great services to, the institution. And that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his widow and family."

OBITUARY
Jewish Herald April 2, 1909
MR. MENDEL COHEN
The Jewish community of Melbourne has been particularly unfortunate lately in the loss of so many of its older communal workers. Not the least notable of these bereavements was caused by the sudden death, on Wednesday week, of Mr Mendel Cohen, president of the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, at the age of 72. Mr Cohen was associated with the fortunes of that Congregation ever since his arrival in Melbourne in 1857, and for more that forty years of that time was connected with its Board of Management in the capacities of committeeman, treasurer and president.
That he was repeatedly elected to fill the latter position shows the confidence that was felt in his administration, and even those who on occasion vigorously opposed his policy always readily admitted the sincerity of his devotion to the interests of the institution and the great value of the services he rendered it. In addition to his own Congregation, to which he chiefly applied his communal labours, Mr Cohen was a prominent and valued supporter, of the Melbourne Jewish Philanthropic Society. When on a visit to England a few years ago, he had the advantage of several conferences with the Chief Rabbi on several important topics connected with Melbourne congregational affairs. He leaves a widow and grown-up family of six sons and four daughters.
The remains of the deceased were interred in the Melbourne General Cemetery on the 26th. ult., the funeral being very largely attended. Besides the executive of the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, representatives of the Boards of Management of the Melbourne and St. Kilda Hebrew Congregations, and the Melbourne Jewish Philanthropic Society were present. The burial service was conducted by the Rev. J. Lenzer, Rabbi Dr. Abrahams, and the Reverend J. Danglow, B.A. The Rev. Mr. Lenzer, minister of the deceased's own Congregation, spoke as follow at the grave; " Dear friends and members of the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, we are gathered here on this sacred ground, where lie so many of our community, whom G-d in his merciful disposition has called from this earthly abode to dwell with Him in His realm of bliss. There, where so many of us shed the tribute of our tears over the dust of those whose memory lives our grateful hearts; here, where there is no distinction between persons, the eternal bode of the rich and the poor, of the wise and the simple alike; here, where on the threshold of life eternal we do not call to mind the sins of the erring, for we know that there is no-one without blemish the sight of the Creator, but that all stand in need of His unbounded mercy and forgiveness; here, brethren, have we come to pay our last tribute of respect to a worthy and useful member of the community, and to express deep sympathy with his near and dear ones who mourn their sad loss. This large concourse of people, including representatives of the sister Congregations, as also of the Jewish Philanthropic Society is sufficient evidence of the respect and esteem in which our departed brother was held. Close upon half a century he was connected with the communal work in general, and with that of the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation in particular. From the early days of his arrival in this country up to the day of his departure from this world, his ambition was to live among his own people and to carry out his religious duties as far as lay in his power. As one of the pioneers of the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation his desire was not only to belong to it, but also to serve it with all his might and power. He served on the executive of this Congregation for a period of forty years and upwards. Having acted for a number of years as member of committees, he was then elected treasurer, and then president, the highest office the Congregation could bestow. This position he occupied at frequent intervals, and in this position he died.
"The interest he evinced in the welfare of the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation at all times was equal to that he exhibited in his personal affairs. His anxiety was not only to improve the financial position of the Congregation, but he also deplored the lack of interest shown by the rising generation in congregational affairs. Noone felt more grieved at the occasional paucity of attendance at the Synagogue on Sabbaths and festivals than did our departed president, and on the other hand, nothing gave him greater pleasure than to see the House of G-d well filled. In the direction of charity, he well carried out his responsibilities and for some time he was a member of the executive of the Jewish Philanthropic Society. All I can say is-;
Chabol- "Woe for those that are lost and cannot be replaced. While the community increases in numbers its workers are diminishing in numbers. The loss of our brother to the community in general and to the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation in particular is great, and will be felt for a long time to come.
"As for you, dear mourners, I cannot console you. Your loss is indeed irreparable. The only consolation that I may offer you is that you may bear in mind the good work your dear father has done in the community at large and in connection with the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation in particular, and to endeavour ro follow his example in that direction.
"As for ourselves, brethren, let me quote the works of one of the sages to his friend whom he heard sigh- 'If thy sighing be concerning the world to come' said the sage, 'behold thy affairs have already prospered, but if it be concerning this world, be assured that thy wares have already perished'. This requires no comment, but let us bear in mind the words of the wise King- Ayn Adam shalit baroo'ach lichloh et -baroohoo-' There is no man that hath control over the spirit to retain the spirit.' (Bccles. viii. 8) We need only reflect the sudden death of our brother before us, to whom the traditional words I now apply.
Lech b'shalom v'tinuach bshalom ha'amood l'katz haymayn Amen"

Hannah Solomons:
Notes from Robert Sheezel;
Hannah Solomons was born on the 25 July 1846, the third child of Lewis and Charlotte Solomons. As yet nothing is known about her background between then and 1857. On 25 July 1857, Hannah, her parents, and four of her five brothers and sisters arrived in what was then called Port Phillip on the vessel 'Essex', of 775 tons. The 'Essex' departed Gravesend, England , on or around 18 April 1857, the master being Joseph S Alwood. There were 130 adults, 29 children between the ages of one and twelve, and 3 infants on the vessel, with all but eleven travelling steerage class.
Nothing again is as yet known about Hannah until she married Mendel on 9 September 1863 at the tender age of 16 years. Her marital status at the time of marriage was listed as 'Spinster', which one might also read as 'eligible lady', and her occupation as that of dressmaker (entered in the older English style as 'drefs maker.') Her address was listed as 178 Russell-Street, which was later to become her residence with Mendel.
Hannah gave birth to a total of twelve children, ten of who survived childhood. One interesting point is that of the twelve birth registrations, six showed Hannah's maiden name as Solomon, rather than Solomons.
There is minimal reporting of Hannah in The Jewish Herald. This situation is compounded by the fact that the papers of the day usually referred to wives by the formal Mrs (husband's initial). As there was also a Mrs. Montague Cohen, and a Mrs. M. J. Cohen, some reports are believed to be one of the latter two rather than Hannah. This is especially so with a number of reports that a Mrs M. Cohen attended the monthly meetings of the Hebrew Ladies Benevolent Society. However Hannah was mentioned in the report referring to Lewis' Barmitzvah.
'Saturday, the 12 January, was a gala day at the East Melbourne synagogue. A son of Mr Mendel Cohen (president) was Bar Mitzvah, and a very lively and general interest was taken in the celebration. Unfortunately, The Rev. J Lenzer was too ill to attend, but at his invitation and with the concurrence of the Board of Management, the Rev. Dr Abrahams, of the Bourke St Synagogue, kindly officiated.There were also present: Mr j B Kaufman (president of the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation) and Mr E L Zox , M L A, both of whom occupied seats in the Parness box. Master Cohen read his Parshah very well indeed, while his brother read the Haphtorah. During the service Dr Abrahams addressed the Bar Mitzvah boy in an eloquent address, touching at the same time upon the amalgamation question now engaging the attention of the leaders of the two congregations. A prayer was also offered up for the speedy recovery of the late Rev Mr Lenzer. The offerings in honour of the occasion were both numerous and liberal. After the service a large number of people, including the Rev Dr Abrahams, Messrs M A Rapken (treasurer of the congregation), J lohr, A Goldberg, J B Kaifman and others, called at the residence of Mr and Mrs Cohen to offer them their congratulations. The usual Kiddush was made by Dr Abrahams and the company partook of light refreshments. Mrs Cohen, assisted by her daughters, made a splendid hostess. The health of the Bar Mitzvah was enthusiastically drunk, and many were the good wishes for his future welfare. He was also the happy recipient of numerous presents, including a silk Tallis from the Rev Lemzer, and a costly diamond pin from Mr M A Rapken.'
(The Jewish Herald January 26th, 1894, p 49)
She was also mentioned as preparing the food, for the presentation of the Illuminated Address to Mendel in 1903.
'....during a period of 28 years Mrs Cohen had cheerfully supported her husband, and often forgone the pleasure of his company in order to enable him to look after the business of the congregation, they felt that we should not forget this example of self denial, but show her their appreciation of it by making a presentation to her also, which, as they would note, consisted of a silver tea and coffee service. It was to be hoped that Mr and Mrs Cohen's sons and daughters would, in time to come, look upon these things as an incentive to follow in the footsteps of their good parents. They all trusted that Mr and Mrs Cohen would long be spared in health and strength to continue their good work.' (The Jewish Herald 13 February 1903, P 83)
Although New Years greetings appeared in The Jewish Herald from around 1915, Hannah placed only one greeting, in 1921 -5681, not long before her death.
'COHEN - Mrs Mendel Cohen of 187 Mills Street Albert park, wishes her friends a Happy New Year and well over their fast.' (Jewish Herald, Sept 30th, 1921 p 9).)
Hannah passed away on 4 September 1922 at 82 Queens Road Melbourne. It is believed this was a hospice. The cause of her death was given by her doctor, Dr R Morton, as diabetes and gangrene of both feet, one or both of which she suffered for the past six years. Her usual residence at the time of death was 157 Mills Street, Albert Park, which was the home of her son Samuel. The witness to the certificate was listed as Solomon M Solomon - Jewish Rabbi, A Solomon, possibly her grandson Albert Solomon, and an A Whittle.
Hannah was buried alongside Mendel at the Melbourne General (Carlton) cemetery the next day. She rated only a small mention on the single upright matzeiva located across the middle of the double plot; there are no horizontal slabs, only fine white stones surrounded by a small wrought-iron railing mounted on small granite blocks. The undertaker was John Daly, who conducted most of the Jewish burials of the day. Hannah's consecration was held on Sunday 27 may 1923.(The Australian Jewish Herald, 25 May 1923. The advertisement stated that it had been inserted by her sons Samuel and Henry Cohen.)
